A Contractor’s Christmas Poem
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the new addition
Not a creature was stirring but a contractor with ambition.
The drywall was fastened to the studs with much care
In hopes that St. Nicholas would soon finish repair.
With Bob in his dust mask and I in my boots,
We had just settled down to refinish the stoop.
When out in the foyer there arose such a clatter
I grabbed my work light to see what was the matter.
Away to the landing I flew like a flash,
But the stairs were so slippery I fell on my adze.
The moon on the shiny new flooring did glare
And I feared to tread upon it lest I have to repair.
When what did my wondering eyes soon behold
But a pickup full of Clean&Safe® that a worker unrolled.
With a little old driver so lively and quick
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his workers they came,
And he whistled and shouted and yelled all their names.
Now Robert, now Marcus, now Travis and Joel,
Get that drop cloth down now or your heads will roll!
From the top of the stairs to the door down the hall,
Now roll it out, trim it and no one will fall!
As dust, snow and mud from workers’ boots gathered,

So up to the staircase the workers they flew,
With their ladders and paint and St. Nicholas, too.
And after a moment I heard a crash on the floor
A paint can just fell – oh gosh, no, the horror!
But St. Nick appeared and he just shook his head,

He spoke not a word and went straight to his work,
He rolled up the drop cloth, then turned with a jerk.
The floor was still perfect, without any scratch.
It’s true, it’s a miracle, there’s not even a catch!
He loaded his pickup with drop cloths to reuse,
And I left to give the homeowners some very good news.
“Your new floor is perfect”, I exclaimed, “Your remodel complete!
